What types of Electricians are there?

The two most common types of electricians in Canada are Construction & Maintenance (C&M) electricians and Industrial electricians.

Construction & Maintenance Electrician

A Construction & Maintenance (C&M) electrician license allows you to perform electrical installation and maintenance work in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors in most provinces. Select a province from the list below for specific details.

Industrial Electrician

An Industrial Electrician works specifically within the industrial sector. In some provinces, this license is mandatory, while in others, it is voluntary.

What is an Electrical Apprenticeship?

An electrical apprenticeship may vary by province but generally includes both on-the-job training and in-class theory. In Ontario, a Construction and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship typically takes 5 years to complete. It requires the apprentice to complete 3 levels of schooling (840 hours) and 8,160 hours of on-the-job training and work experience.

An alternative to completing an electrical apprenticeship is to successfully pass the Trade Equivalency Assessment (TEA). The TEA is designed for individuals who have equivalent knowledge, training, and work experience in the electrical industry. If you pass the TEA, you will be eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) exam to obtain your electrician’s license.

What is a pre-apprenticeship program?

A pre-apprenticeship program is a course designed to equip you with the foundational knowledge that most employers look for before hiring you as an electrical apprentice. These courses typically cover electrical theory, safety protocols, and an overview of the various careers within the electrical industry.
